F-14One of the most famous fighter ever, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat made its last flight on September 22. 2006 in a flight display at Oceana Naval Air Station. The world famous, immortalized by the 1980’s movie Top Gun, the F-14 Tomcat gathered about 3000 guests to see the ‘Cat’ for the last time in air.

Russian strategic bombers launched cruise missiles

Tu-160Russian Strategic Airforces have launched cruise missiles during the HQ and command exercise at a northern testing ground. The band under command consisted of two Tu-160 Blackjack and two Tu-95MSD Bear bombers which flew over 10-hour missions with in-flight refuellings. Russia said that the exercise was successful and all cruise missiles have been said to hit their targets.

At the same time in the southern Russia at Guryanovo testing ground, six Tu-22M Backfire Cs carried out training bombing and cruise missile launching.

These exercises were initially announced by RIA Novosti.

MiG-29SMTs to Yemen

MiG-29 Russian aircraft manufacturer RAC MiG has recieved an order of 32 MiG-29SMT fighters from Yemen. The deal is worth of $1.3 billion dollars. In addition, MiG is to repair 66 of the Yemens older MiG-29 fighters in the first quarter of 2007.

Thanks to the recent orders MiG’s order book will almost double to worth of $4.5 billion. This is very delightfull news because MiG’s renevues has growth from the $245 million in 2005 to $1.1 billion in 2007. Despite this, MiG still holds the second largest aircraft manufacturer place in Russia after Sukhoi.

B-52 getting old

B-52 The legendary B-52 Stratofortress is to be the longest living active duty military plane in history. At the time its even much older than the men who maintain it.

The B-52 was initially designed to carry a nuclear bomb to the Soviet Union in the height of cold war. The bomber made its maiden flight in 1954 and got into service next year. Since then it has been involved nearly every single conflict the US has fought after Vietnam war. The US is planning to serve it to 2040s then being in service for nearly 90 years!
