Avro Arrow, or Supersonic Sentinel, is a fascinating documentary film showing the development and production of the CF-105 Arrow interceptor in the mid 1950s.
This colour film was made at the time of the development of the aircraft and so is very enthusiastic about the project and it`s future which alas was cut short when the program was cancelled in 1958.

The film shows how the first Arrow wasn`t a prototype in the usual sense, rather it was constructed using the same tooling and techniques which were created for the production aircraft so the company was obviously very confident in the Arrow and it`s future. Indeed at one stage the aircraft was being considered for service with the Royal Air Force and the French were interested in purchasing the Orenda Iroquois engine which was being developed for the CF-105.
The performance demanded of the Arrow required a huge amount of investment in new manufacturing equipment and processes by Avro Canada and very much in evidence in this film is the effort required to design an advanced aircraft in an age where computers were primitive and there was no access to virtual testing or simulation.
There are many shots of the Arrow in flight during the testing process along with recorded transmissions from the test pilot although the music being played during the flight scenes is a little distracting and unnecessary but that was the style of these films at the time.
This is a very interesting film showing the development and testing of a very impressive aircraft.
