the Tornado is nice, but the F-14 is much nicer, both in looks and performance

Can anyone tell me the source of the soot on the vertical stabilizers of a lot of F3's? I've spent a fair amount of time @ Holloman AFB in New Mexico where a lot of German F3's are stationed, and I noticed that many of their jets had the same soot marking.
