I don't remember any pilot going to jail, in both cases the fighter pilots reported back that the planes in question seem to be civil and hesitated and in both cases they were ordered to shoot them down without further verification. |

No, fortunately there was no jail, not even court-martial as far as I know but
Col.Osipovitch got so much troubles that he left the air force and became a cab driver. Quite decent and understendable story can be found by now with a bit of diligent search (for example by typing KAL 007 or KAL 007 diver, and similar expressions into the search-window...) rense.com, whatreallyhappened.com, and similar links should be checked. Albeit-with the KAL 007 we deviated from 1944! But since we already did: Did you know that ALL the Soviet troops stationed in Hungary have been constantly in "battle status" (i.e.: just like in Chechnia or Georgia with shooting wars!) with according applicable regulations, laws, precautions and procedures? Yet-the biggest dangers they faced in real life was that the merchandise they purchased will be "socialist quality" or will be confiscated upon travelling back home through Chop by those eager customs officers of the CCCP:

With jail - sorry, my mistake. But my issue was in difference between cases, between reward in one case and punishment in other. This what make sense for me. Quote:
Actually no. I've just read book about Chechnya and soldiers were complaining that they receive money as they are in peacekeeping mission, not in battle combat. Though, they were treated there (by officers) exactly according to the laws of the war.

Pavel, did you see the "ogrish.com" (and other similar sites) videos from the many fights in that war (plus others in that region)? You can really get cocked up (or vomiting, depending on mood) to nuke some bastards from the sight. And officially-you are probably right: those soldiers were not abroad!
(The ones in Hungary however were beyond borders of the USSR...). Sweet bueraucracies.

ogrish.com opens "http://www.liveleak.com/?ogr=1" for me. But I think I know what I will see on that video. And yes, sometimes it even worse then war. And yes, most of the deeds there makes me wish such people would never been born. But what's your point?

A La-5 was dug up in Hungary which was shot down at low altitude by a German Me-109. I can get the number of the unit the plane belonged to, but the Soviet pilot's identity is still unknown /his chute could not open, he bailed out below 100 m altitude (by some witnesses-even much lower than that).
If I get the details-maybe Pavel could help finding out more about him. P.S.: Pavel, did you participate on Victory Day Parade? How was it?

Janos, I was in Kubinka on the victory day parade, to let the guys out for the parade and to welcome them back, here I put some photo:
http://www.aviapedia.com/forum/gener...-day-2067.html Was nice, especially I've liked the helicopters formation, of Mi-26, Mi-28N, Berkut's Mi-24, Ka-50, Ka-52. They were hovering over the airfield in formation so nicely! My camera didn't allow me to make a photo, I was watching through the binocular, but my friend is editing now the video he did, I hope it will be good-looking.

Thanks Pavel... Last night I watchede a one-hour documentary movie about the children living around a train station in Moscow "Children of Leningradsky/Dyetji Leningradskovo"). Allegedly there are large numbers in Russia. It was about as terrible as the Leningrad siege may have been, and it is unavoidable to think what will this generation mean to themselves and to others during the near future. This is where the "defence of homeland", "defense of society" and similar actions are warranted most, not elsewhere-I think.
I am concerned, but not stumbled to brainstoppage yet... Could not be some abandoned military base be used to house, educate, and shelter some of these kids (perhaps with options of work-equity stocks in modernised bases)?
