The Russian main weapon exporter, Rosoboronexport is completing negotiations with China of delivering up to 50 Su-33 (Su-27K) Flanker-D ship-borne fighter variant of the famous Su-27 Flanker-B. The possible deal is stated to be a worth of US$2.5 billion. China will acquire the first two Su-33s in 2007 or 2008 for evaluations and trials. The fighters will be produced by Komsomolsk-no-Amur’s Sukhoi facility.
These first two Su-33s will be first tested on land bases and then on an aircraft carrier. China’s Dalian Shipyard is at the time refitting the ex-Soviet Navy aircraft carrier Varyag which China acquired in 1999. The ship has been stationed at the Dalian Shipyard since 2002 and has been painted to the PLA Navy grey in 2005. This first fighter batchm have an option of further delivery of 12 Su-33s and may ultimately widen to consist of 48 Su-33 figters.
China is estimated to have an aircraft carrier in full operational service by 2010. China is also known to have had some effort on building its own naval fighter with Russian technology. China is currently operating two major variants of the Su-27 Flanker, Su-27SK/UBK and Su-30MKK/MKK2.
