APG-79(V)3Raytheon have announced that it has delivered the first Next-Generation Electronically Scanned Array or AESA to Boeing’s F-15C Eagle. This happened ahead of schedule in late June. It has got a lot of testing and testflights before Raytheon gav it the final verification.

The new APG-63(V)3 prooved to be even better than supposed and thus offers multiple times better performance than the old APG-63(V)2 das-antenna radar. There will be still more test flights to proove the much enhanced ait-to-air capabilities of the radar.

“The (V)3 AESA radar’s ability to act as the core sensor backbone of the aircraft by providing accurate and timely information makes it a true force multiplier for the F-15″, praised Erv Grau, the vice president of air combat avionics at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems.

The APG-63(V)3 is an easy, cheap, reliable and proven capability enhancement to the ageing but still stiff fleet of F-15Cs. Its reliability comes from that the AESA radar doesen’t need any costly, heavy and delicate mechanism to steer the radar antenna. This is accomplished by active electronic beam scanning which allows the radar beam to be steered near the speed of light. This gives pilot ability to see further than before and nearly simultaneously track targets on the ground and air. USN has already took the AESA, APG-79 on test use with the Super Hornet.
