On the 6 of February new Russian multifunctional fighter MiG-35 will be presented to the Indian Air Forces, right before the “Air India 2007″ international aerospace and defence exhibition in Bangalore. Today it was announced by the “MiG” Russian Aircraft Corporation.
On the opening at 7th of February exhibition in Bangalore MiG corporation is planning to demonstrate not only MiG-35 but navy fighter MiG-29KUB as well, which was created by the India NAVY request.
Russian press will see both fighters on the 22 of January on the territory of Flight Research Institute named after M.M. Gromov, Moscow.
MiG-35 is 4++ generation fighter, result of worldwide known MiG-29 fighter deep modification.
Flight tests were finished by the end of 2006.
Fighter is equipped with 5th generation avionics. It was developed by the leading Russian companies using latest technologies, including ones which never were used in aviation industry before.
MiG-35 is the first Russian aircraft to have new radar with active phased array Zhuk-AE (Bug-AE), which was developed by Fazotron NIIR (Radar research and development establishment). In development of MiG-35 optical-electronic equipment were used space technologies, before the were used only in Russian space systems. By the avionics technology level MiG-35 will be one of the best fighters in the world till the Russian 5th generation fighter creation.
Russian Ministry of Defence is reviewing the possibility to buy MiG-35 for the Russian Air Forces.
MiG-35 demonstration on the Aero India 2007 in february will be one of the steps for the RAC MiG to participate in India AF tender to buy new multi-role fighters according the MMRCA program (Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft).
It’s being expected the sum for the supplies and serial production of 126 fighters will be above $6 billions. MiG will offer for the tender MiG-35 in single and two-seater variants. The main competitors for the MiG corporation in India will be leading aviation companies of USA, France, UK and other countries with their F-16C/D, F/A-18E/F, Gripen, Rafale, Typhoon.
Russian political and military authority very actively supporting RAC MiG in its partnership relations with India building process, especially MiG participation in MMRCA tender. The topic of more deep partnership between Russia and India in terms of aviation industry will be discussed in January 2007 firstly during Russian-Indian commission by the military-technical cooperation (Heading from Russian side - Russian Minister of Defence Ivanov S.B.) and afterwards during Russian president Vladimir Putin’s visit to Delhi, India.

Is it just me, or does the skin on this new MiG seems smoother, less “rivety” (my new word of the day) than previous generations?

India is a good strong ally to Russia!
Americans and Russians, dont fight. Be friends, there are lot of other bad countries on our planet!
India shall be Russia’s ally in war!

You have stated
” Russian press will see both fighters on the 22 of January on the territory of Flight Research Institute named after M.M. Gromov, Moscow”
“Both” fighters ? I thought only the MiG-29KUB was to be on display on that day ?

Daaamnn!!!Comparing to these numbers F-22’s price is a bargain!!
Comment by gabi kretzu — January 19, 2007 #
The Mig-35 sounds like one tough customer. I can hardly wait to see the one-seater version.
Comment by Blacktail — January 19, 2007 #
Guys, sorry, my mistake. It was $126 billions in the text before - no, $6 billions contract.
Gabi, thank you very much for attracting my attention to this.
Comment by Pavel — January 19, 2007 #
Dee Mann - yes, both. MiG-35 and MiG-29KUB
Comment by Pavel — January 19, 2007 #
Why don’t they just call the MiG-29 KUB a MiG-35 also?!?!
Comment by Rich — January 20, 2007 #
Because it’s different planes - MiG-35 is airforce fighter and MiG-29KUB is navy fighter. I would expect even different engines on these planes - Mig-29KUB need much more forced and protected engine for the carrier take-offs and landings.

and what about mig-29OVT? is it only a demonstrator like su-37 was, or is it for sell? will mig-35 have TVC engines?
Comment by bogdanS — January 21, 2007 #
Mig-35 is Mig-29OVT for export!
Comment by Pavel — January 21, 2007 #
these rusians, always make something to shake the world!look this mig 35 again!!!they are the best!

God, i love mig-29…i feel angry that romania renounced to her mig-29’s. i dream to be a fighter pilot and would have liked to fly mig-29 in stead of…gripen or f-16 or even f-18..God knows what we will purchase…
Comment by bogdanS — January 28, 2007 #
Pavel, please, don’t make a mess in all these designations - it’s not simple thing by itself, to make it even more complicated.
Mig-35 and Mig-29OVT are two completely different planes. More of it, in general OVT is just an add-on for engine (different nozzles control system), which can be added to any plane. Actually, both Mig-29OVT and Mig-35 has the same RD-33 engines (maybe different modifications) so OVT may be applied to Mig-35 as well, if customer will ask for it.

well I think this Mig-35 is a a great aircraft, I´m from Venezuela, Air force from my country were close to buy a couple dozen of Mig-29M2 but they decline in favour of the Sukhoi SU-30MK2.. those guys from MIG company gonna have to do a good marketin job in order to defeat Sukhoi potencial costumers
Comment by proaudio — January 30, 2007 #
Thanks for that perfect site :). BogdanS - Bulgaria is makinig the same weird things with its Migs.I think Russian planes will be best in the world many years. At least I hope they will be
cheers

i still ask my self…what is the big problem with mig 29? because, a lot of countries retired it from service. it-s true that his range is a little short, is has 2 engines and not very big fuel capacity, but…coudn’t mig factory find a solution? why f-16 keeps to live, to make a career and mig 29 is aging every day? i mean, i can’t explain how, suddenly, an exelent fighter, with advanced aerodinamic configuration and, why not avionics(bacause when mig 29 got SLAM sistem, sighting helmet, f-16 was just a kid) becomes an old fighter, a charge for the countries who use it….can anybody explain that? i know that somewhere is the politisc, but…. i just don’t understand…

Thanx! With advent of Mig-35, MG has finally emerged out of a long and undesired hibernation.
I do not see the SU as the real competitors of the MIG. I think that they both belong to different classes of military aircraft’s. However the feelings of mutual healthy competition shall naturally arise and should be ensured when dealing within the same market pool.
Mig-35 is not meant to compete with F-22 or Eurofighter or Rafale or Grippen. Rather Mig-35 is competing in advance with F-35.
All the best…

Weel Mr. Ace I see you watch a lot of US hollywood movies, when US aircraft shoot down every Mig that apear so easily, perhapsm you din´t Know that a Couple yars ago your F-15, F-18 and F16 were defeated bye Indian SU-30 and mig-29(old version), in a military trainig operation, every body Knows about that, so if a old Mig-29 could defeat a F-15, can you imagine what can a brand new MIG.35 do?, you really subestimate those news russian warplanes,
Comment by proaudio — February 8, 2007 #
The F-22 has the greatest ability to sneak up undetected to close range fighting to the opponents. Then - if the opponent happens to be a new Super Fulcrum or Super Flanker: the F-22 gets the shit kicked out of him before he can say: “chimichanga”!
Comment by sicsok — February 16, 2007 #
Well i think this mig 35 is almost a brand new a/c compared to the first mig29s, and the quality of the finish has clearly improved. From what I’ve seen on news Mig will also add in manufacturing license with the deal. Probably similar to the SU-30MKI deal, where India can assemble the engines.
Oh and the time India kicked the Israelis at war games, from what I heard was they were a bit handicapped with no AWACS, while Indians had the full privilege of an AWACS. But I’m not 100% sure what went down exactly except the sukhois kicked ass.
BogdanS the f-16 was well planned to be upgraded, eg block series. While the mig29 was designed in soviet times where computer technology didn’t go down to well and it was more about the numbers and different aviation doctrine. Plus after the collapse design bureaus such as Mikoyan struggled. The Russian Navy turned down the mig-29K for the Sukhoi, and i don’t think they were making any good.

The existing stealth technology is likely to become redundant as a measure of offence in near future, with the introduction of new detection techniques.

I would like to answer on the question of bogdanS.
The MIG-29s that have Bulgaria and Rumania, as an example, are old, with by now old aerotechnics.
And I wanted to ask bogdanS,are you bulgarian?
Are there other bulgarians?

pictures and airshows should not be the basis in determining the best considering the billions that would be spend in acquiring these jets. what you can see are just its airframes, aerodynamic designs, and armaments but there are really more to it than meet the eye. there are more systems inside than what is outside. Let’s take the American F-22 Raptor for example, it may not have the awesome looks of a Mig-35 but some of its features are,- skin is made up of 67% Titanium with electron beam welded sub-assemblies to withstand high Gs and supersonic speeds for extended periods plus coated with radar absorbent material at designed angles to reduce reflection of enemies’ radar waves. it also disguises its infrared engine emissions to make it harder to detect by heat seeking SAMs. Its engines are designed for extended suupersonic cruise without using afterburners with trust vectoring nozzles highly manueveralble at both subsonic and supersonic speeds, it has a high rate of climb at 65,000 feet and capable of Herbst, Pugachev’s cobra and Kulbit manuevers. It has radar warning receiver and passive receiver systems. the f-22’s gruman active electronically scanned array radar with long multiple target acquisitions at 250 miles away with low probability of interception of its own signals by enemy aircraft. its AN/APG77 radar can focus its emission to overload enemy sensors and radars, giving the aircraft an electronic attack capability. It’s aeronautics system’s integrated aviocics and improve sensors for superior situational awareness. It’s onboard computer called raytheon common integrated processor processes at 10.5 billion instructions/second and have a 300 megabytes of memory. can transmit 548 megabit/second and received Gigabit. Informations can be gatrhered from radar and onboard and offboard systems, filtered by the computer and processes for easy to digest ways on several user friendly cockpit displays enabling the pilot to remain on top of complicated situations. it is designed to carry maximum ordinace load in internal bays while remaining stealthy and maneuveralble. The f-22 is a 5th generation fighter and 4th generation stealth technology. it is an air dominance fighter but is equip for ground attack, electronic warfare and signal intelligence roles as well. it was designed against the soviet airforce and can be use as long range bomber operating at enemy airspace. at one of its test, it dropped a 1,000 lbs. JDAM at 50,000 feet and hit a moving target at 24 miles away. in an air to air engagement, because of its advance radar, extended supersonic cruise and stealth technology, it can hit a Mig-35 long before the Mig-35 can engage. its avionics and features truly will make it the most potent fighter jet in the world. but because it is sensitive and expensive at 200 million dollar a piece, the american gov’t barred sale to foreign government. the f-35 lightnning II has some of its features at cheaper price.

The MiG-35 is one of the most advanced fighter jet in the world. The main features is that it has an active electroniocally scanned radar for the first time in any of the Russian fighter.
The Russian knows that the fighter is in competition to the Indian tender of 126 MRCA and the Russian kept its feature undisclosed to anybody and only demostrated the open technoloy.
The radar of the Su-30MKI Mk3 is of almost 350 kms and is a PASA radar, while the radar on MiG-35 is way ahead in terms of technology and range.
India aquiered the SU-30 MKI 10 years back and the Radar technology is even not known to anybody other than indians in the world. During all the air exercise they kept it closed to prevent its frequency from other countries.
Russian knows Indian Air Force will accept only those technology which is unique and in not known to anybody.
As far as technology is concerned MiG-35 must have some most advance features other then meanuvarability and avionics, it is deadly fighter jet.

MiG-35 has super-cruise. It’s frame also coated with RAM, hence it’s RCS is 7 times lower than original MiG-29.
BTW, standard radar of F-22 has an estimated range of 125-150 miles in wide scan mode (though I wonder against what RCS it was counted)
