Recently got to see A-10s on ground during HawgSmoke'08. Plus lots of flying time - just not near thier target range(s). Awsome to hear the rumble from the guns over the range some 10-15 miles away while looking at Aircraft and maintenance crews on the ground.

An F16 cannot carry a ATG payload as high a caliber as the A10 can the F16 is a fighter aircraft, and cannot perform CAS missions, let alone the F16 is outdated as it is, now being replaced by F22s.

Dear Friends,

F16, F18 or F15 (or any FIGHTER JET) may able to play ground attack role but not CAS. Despite A-10 is slower, it has:

-Better survivability: Multiple hydraulic backups which permit A-10 to fly even loss its entire tailplane. No fighter jet can do so.
-Robust design: Creative engines placement which can reduce IR signature.
-Good protection: Kevlar and titanium tub under cockpit floor.
-Stability in low alt, low airspeed: A must-have criteria of a CAS aircraft.

Thanks =)

I think th A-10 is the most rugged plane the U.S. Military has in its arsenal. come on now how many ohter planes do you know of that can get half its wing blown off and still make it back to base. the A-10 is here to stay unless something like the F-35 JSF comes and replaces all the militarys planes

I did the electrical installation for the new TACAN at Pope AFB and the A-10 was always over-flying us while we worked. I even had a look down the main gun as one zeroed in on us in a hole! NEVER want to see that from the other side of the battle. I really miss them and the sound of the engines now that I am in Denver! Keep flying those wonderful, ugly mutts!
