This aircraft was a historical crossroad between sweptwing and deltawing.

Design bureau made two similar prototypes - E-2 (chief engineer Izotov) which had sweptwing and E-4 (chief engineer V.A.Mikoyan) with deltawing. The wing-factor was the only difference between two prototypes.

During the first flights both planes had same behaviour. Deltawing aircraft test-pilots Vladimir Nefedov and Grigory Sedov mentioned that on some flight modes E-4 had strong vibration, Mikoyan decided sharp wingtips were the reason. Without waiting for modifiction permission he took handsaw and cut them out directly on airfiled. This story became a basement for many funnies. It was the first aricraft for Mikoyan as chief engineer.

That time the choiсe was made for the new aerodynamic configuration and it was right for that situation.
