Excellent air combat training video. Doesn’t look like a real clip at all, but very nice as an action movie.
Cast: Mig-29 versus F-18. For sure, Hornet wins… just why? ![]()

the f 18 wins why . i dont understan. if mig 29 dont needs radar for luanch a missil just infra-red, and f-18 is shot-down eassy and the f-18′pilot never knows what his f-18 is follow for a missil. and everyones knows mig 29 it’s plus agile what f 18 hornet and ar-73 missil is best and agile thant sidewinder missil. it’s just another american-movie for best special effec oscar.bye bye

well, i’m not american.
but i think all depends on expertise and technique, as example i can tell, Mirage III can easyly shot down Sea harriers on malvinas war (1982), but training and startegy can make diference, as result british pilots had shot down a lot of Argentina’s mirage III.

I don’t understand either if the f-18 can pull
just 7,5 Gs and the MiG-29 9 Gs
How can the the f-18 even get behind MiG’s tail

hi!
i come from switzerland and i know the context of this movie. This movie has been made when German MiG-29 came in Switzerland for training dogfight against Swiss Hornets. But nothing is real in this movie, only great pictures have been taken. And it’s a swiss movie, then finally the hornet wins… that’s it! (sorry for my poor english…)

Gentlemen, It is a training Video, there was a similiar program on the Military Channel, it was about one hour long. Young Navy F/A 18 pilots were being trained in air combat against the MiG. Training was Luftwaffe, vs US Navy, in Former East Germany. Even though the MIG is superior in close combat situations, the MIGs were constrained by the “Rules” of the Training exercise, they, the MIG pilots did not like it either. In one instance, the MIG broke from the “Rules” to get a simulated kill on the Navy F/A-18. It was great program and good learning for both Air Forces. MIG pilots used the excellent Helmet HUD system for their heat seeking missle. Imn real life, I have seen those come off the rail and turn damn near 90 degree to go after their prey!

Yes, yes, all this is a training video. The Hornet wins. Big surprise. A fight, a DOGFIGHT, F-18C vs. MiG-29C with CLONE pilots, the MiG will win. REALITY, it will BVR with all sorts of electronic nightmares the MiG pilot will have to endure. Between ECM, ECCM, AWACS, Data Link and better RADAR, the MiG will die. Plus OVERALL U.S. and WEStERN pilots are better trained. Oh and for the record, the hornet is stressed at 9 G’s too. The f-14 is limited to 7.5 MAX. Along with the F-15, though the F-15C can be over G’d by 17%.

the last past saw many situations where there were confrotation between either F 16,15 or F 18 with all family of MIG 29 or SU 27 and everytime russan had lost.
russan manoeuvrabilty is good only for airshow not for war
if maneuvrabilty for decisive factor for the victory ,western countries would adpot it first before russian because the first jet with vectorial trust was british one with the harrier II. During the bigning of eigties years US had many protypes of F 15 and F 16 and F14 wih vectoriel thrust but they abdunned them.the uniq jet which benfeted from little vectoriel thrust the F 18 builtby Mac Donnel Douglas

I have read a report on ADJ in 90’s, that when RMAF just acquired MiG-29 and they having this
annual FDA exercise with RAAF F-18. What really
concerned by RAAF officer is MiG-29 always got
on their tail on simulated combat, I don’t know whether this is true or not but that on the report
read!

I have some minor questions.
1. When the Hornet gets the advantage, the radar intercept officer has told to the pilot that where he can find the MiG. How can the ground intercept radar detect the MiG when he is flying in the valley???
2. How can the Hornet detect the IR lock?
3. And, at the begining the MiG was always in shooting position. Why did not shoot?!
But hey, this is a very cool action film. I like it ;D

Only the initial versions of the mig-29 had poor
electronic support as has been commented above.
Also AWACS and data link support is not imp in a
dogfight. In real war whether close combat or BVR
the mig-29 would have atleast a 2:1 superiority over either the F-18 or F-16.

You realize if an F-22 Raptor entered this airspace, both of these planes would be blown out of the sky before realizing they had company.

F22! Stealth! Only works against enemy with out of date radar! Enemy hideing in caves & against their own air force. e.g. Against a bunch of F15’s, which (surprise-surprise) they say they didnt see. Well of course they didnt see it, just more propaganda, I wouldnt be surprised if they did see it, their not gonna say they did are they? Up to now, as far as sources are concerned, its only been up against US aircraft, apart from the RAF’s Typhoon, and even they were popping shots at it at 80+ miles. AND, getting simulated kill’s pretty much most of the time in WVR! Which speaks volumes about the F22’s so called dumb price range & claims, best fighter ever? Dont think so chaps! Over prised, over hyped, over rated! (Just my opinion btw. Dont mean to be offensive).
BTW! Cool video! For hollywood!!!
Ta-ta chaps!

Stig needs to wake up — The F-22 won’t be detected by any radar the British or anyone else on the planet has. If the Brits are so smart and so good why do they come to the U.S to get training? The F-22 is the best fighter in the world and I would not be surprised that in the near future the so called other allies start begging for the U.S. to sell the F-22’s. Eat your heart out boys - you ain’t going to get it….
Comment by Terry — May 7, 2008 #
hello all. from wher you know that “The F-22 won’t be detected by any radar the British or anyone else on the planet”.
have you or other donkeys examined that or you are a predictor???
I think you hardly need to wake up terry…
maybe you have examine all radars by f22 in your dreams.

Mig 29 this, F18, F16 that. Look at the real-world statistics: How many F16’s have been shot down in dog-fights? How many F18’s? Now look at the number of Mig 29’s lost over Kosovo, Iraq and elsewhere to US-made fighters. I guess we should also include the F15, which has the best combat history, 104 kills in air combat to 0, yes, zero losses in air combat.
Sorry, folks, the Mig 29 has not yet realized its potential, real or imagined against US fighters.
Comment by Tim — July 2, 2008 #
Sure the americans have better records, but those records are held against developing and third world countries. Of course, that isn’t to say the F-16 fighting falcon, F/A-18 hornet, and F-15 eagle(I’m actually an EAGLE fan.)are bad, it’s only to say that
the mig’s shouldn’t be looked down upon that much either.
Comment by Bill — July 15, 2008 #
According to Bill Gunston, the military aviation writer and pilot, in his 1989 book “Fighter Missions”, described a hypothetical scenario whereby a F16-C tangoed with a Mig-29A. F16 with a well trained pilot whereas the Mig had an inept one. In his opinion, this dogfight will result in a stalement in all probability.
This says something about the planes and the drivers at that time.
Comment by Carl — September 25, 2008 #
Anyway, this clip is from a made for Swiss TV movie, not some real training video.

****** Plus OVERALL U.S. and WEStERN pilots are better trained.******
Depends on which airforce you are comparing it with. The newly showcased Mig 35 at bangalore airshow stole the show despite the presence of much hyped LMA F16 and Boeing FA18 (to a certain extent rightly so). Indian pilots who saw this bird were pleasantly surprised by certain features of this plane.
This 126 million dollar deal would be a shot in the arm for the one that clenches it. Everyoe thought it would be all american affair until the Mig 35 flew in all the way from Moscow till Bangalore in less than 3 hours
Like someone said earlier, it depends on strategies as well.
Comment by phoenix — October 14, 2008 #
i agree with phoenix’s view, Third world countries even they have MIG-29s, Su-30 MKI and Su-35. They might have difficulties operating them in the aspect of their weaponry and also their pilot skills. when pitted againist US fighters who are well trained and armed with better missiles they do not stand a chance even though their aircraft is capable of winning a guns only dogfight but not a missile era dogfight thanks to mediocore russian missiles.
Comment by buster — November 4, 2008 #
There’s not yet any fight between F-15/18/16 against the SU-27 and derivatives. Syria and Iran attempted to acquire SU-30 only to be thwarted by US and Israel. But they allow both Syria and Iran to posses MIG-29. this should say something about the SU-30 capability.
Comment by Pavel — February 12, 2009 #
this is absard mig 29 is far more superior
Comment by debarun — March 6, 2009 #
When the iron curtain fell, the west have a glimpse of a Russian missiles inherited by the unified Germany Air Force. they were surprised to find that russian missiles technology were years ahead of any in the western inventory. R-27 for example, are modular in design and can be upgraded in parts. the single missile can even use a different seeker by swithing the seeker head.
Comment by Pavel — March 12, 2009 #
I work for the Black Aces, Im an AT and I deal with all the radar systems,
The Superhornet is not as fast or agile as a mig, but what she DOES have is stealth and jadarjamming. Also, she will never go into combat by herself, she will most likely have an EA6B soon ro be relpaced by the EA18G electronic attack aircraft. But again, its a movie, That and its against an aging Charlie, Not a newer Echo of Foxtrot.
Comment by Zachary — April 20, 2009 #
I know an ex tornado squadron leader, he told me the ruskie jets are piles of junk , terrible radars, missiles, ecm and poorly trained pilots .
He said the Tornado F3 with Amraam and Asramm would wipe out any Soviet junk never mind the F22 and Eurofighter .
Please can all these supporters of useless Ruskie Jets stop now !!
