Did they survived?
Comment by Mig 25 — March 7, 2006 #
Yes, both pilots survived, but 74 show visitors died because of this crash… completely awfull.
Pilots were convicted, pilot got 14 years of jail with about $1.5 billions (????) penalty. Co-pilot (navigator) got 8 years of jail and $450 thousands penalty.
Weird. Do they think Russian pilots are millionaires? And what for co-pilot was judged? He could do nothing, responsability and all the plane control was pilot’s.

this was horrible. Many childs died… People was watching the aeroshow with familys. I just dont uderstand, this kind of acrobatics shouldnt be legal in aeroshows. Really sad. What more another disasters of this magnitude happened?
Comment by russian — March 11, 2006 #
It’s just the matter of wise administration, I think.
MAKS show every time gathers even heavy bombers on one airfield. But they doesn’t allow even single pass over people.
I hope such disasters will not happen again.
Comment by Pavel — March 11, 2006 #
How did he crash? I did not see any reasons other then bad piloting.
Comment by Russian Admiral — March 26, 2006 #
Yes, I think the only reason is pilot mistake
Comment by Pavel — March 26, 2006 #
Looks like the pilot stalled and tried to pull out at the last minute to no avail. Quite sad, really.
Comment by Matt — March 26, 2006 #
On the sound track it sounded like there was an engine stall on his turn to the airport. Stunts and fly-bys in airshows should not ever be done over or near spectators … just for the reason we see here: 74 dead … totally tragic and unnecessary!
Comment by Berge — March 30, 2006 #
Da, I agree with Berge
Comment by Russian Admiral — April 1, 2006 #
Berge et al, I’ve been informed that the commentary is in Ukranian, which I don’t speak nor know any one who does. Where can I find:
* a video with English audio dubbed over? or
* a video with English subtitles? or
* a transcript in English?

I think that the pilots should not be put to jail for this because it was a melafunction!
Comment by Richard — April 16, 2006 #
Well it might have been the pilots fault
Comment by Richard — April 16, 2006 #
i heard that the pilot went under the restricted altitude and couldn’t pull up in time.
Comment by Munzy — June 27, 2006 #
I’ve read the the number of people dead as high a 84. Aside from the two pilots 3 other military offcials got 4 to 6 years. But ive also read that the pilots did continue the move the plane away from the croud and only ejected when the plane started to cartwheel.
Comment by Jordan — July 17, 2006 #
Ah folks! The Russians and Ukranians always blame the pilots…NEVER the aircraft (they are trying to sell)
The two guys in the plane were Colonels with a stack of experience on the type.
The fact is that the roll prior to the crash was probably not intentioanl! The elevons (horizontal tail units) may have failed on the starbord side of the A/C when the pilot tried to pull up to the required height for a safe run down the runway infront of the crowd.
Instead of pulling up into horizontal flight as intended by the pilot, only the PORT elevon actuated and rolled the A/C putting the plane into a very dangerous ‘dive’ towards the runway.
Recovery was impossible, but it was obvious that the crew were trying hard to control the roll, when in fact the plane was now totally uncontrolable.
The decision was made to eject very soon after the A/c ‘mushed’ on its way into another unintentional roll toeards the crowd.
Poor bastards! Blame the pilots! We gotta sell these danged things!

Comment by Oleg — December 27, 2006 #
The russian’s jet’s are just as good as american jet’s it’s just that the piolet was doing a trek he wasent supose to do,but why put the co-polet in jail it wasent ge’s fualt. At least the polet trid to pull up,I think most people was choped up by the wing.
Comment by donald — December 30, 2006 #
they sould have nose dive into the field no matter wath would happen (if they died or not) then many lives could have been saved.(sorry if anyone is ofended)

“the russian su-27 stinks ye needs to fly american”
I agree, the American variety have killed far more innocent people (weddings, appartment buildings, schools, etc.) with deadly accuracy. AND, they were precision-guided :). Go USA.
Comment by J.Y.E — January 25, 2007 #
thats not funny J.Y.E thats sad.

Go Russa! You is BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by JockerRUS — February 5, 2007 #
I have watched aircraft and airshows for many years here in the USA! In watching this auwful video I must come to the conclusion that right after the last roll just prior to the awful crash the SU-27 may not have had enough forward speed and in esense the aircraft “Stalled”. It is a heavy aircraft and it adds up to not enough speed for lift!!! I believe that if the Pilot had known that and had hit full afterburner then maybe he could have come out of it,Behest to the people on the ground would likely had all lost there hearing for a while but better hearing than life!
Accidents happen exstremly fast and human response time is rarely fast enough to respond to such incidense!
One of the worst I have ever viewed!! Very Sorry May God be with all those lost.
Comment by Fred K — March 24, 2007 #
I think this was rudder error, try look closely on the fotage and you will see that the right elevator rudder stands higher than the left one (note that the plane also rolls slowly to the left, it could be becouse of the stall, or maby computer but i think he got a high speed). I think it was a rudde malfunktion. /sorry about my english.
Comment by Maby? — May 15, 2007 #
I’m English, and I think the RAF should buy Russian not American. That way we won’t end up with loads of expensive American aircraft that we have paid for, but can’t fly, because the Pentagon won’t let us have the software for the flight sytems.
Comment by WMP — May 18, 2007 #
I remember watching this on holiday, i think that it is a simple matter of pilot error. I think that he did not carry enough speed into the move and therefore stalled. The same thing happened when the fairy firefly crashed at duxford. Very sad, may god rest their souls.

84 people were killed and over 100 injured. RIP to all those….

Holy crap…I’ve heard about this for a long time, but never have I seen footage of the crash. That was horrible. At least the video that was posted was horrible. If you listen closely you hear the “hickup” of the engines, and following the “hickup” you hear a sudden burst of thrust. I don’t believe that they intended on getting that low, but I bet they were given permission to get lower than usual. I don’t think that it was pilot error, I believe that it was the person who told them to do that’s fault. To me, experience doesn’t count. Those pilots reacted the same way any other person would have, do what your told and react to each situation as it happens. No pilot error, organizational error that was. I feel bad for the people that witnessed it. That is probably the most grusome video I’ve seen in quite some time. R.I.P
Comment by Andrew — August 15, 2007 #
this could have been avoided
look at the vid(s)
the problem was he rolled over to the right
this caused the aircraft to lose attitude quickly
if he rolled to the left in stead they wouldnt have crashed
Comment by chris — November 17, 2007 #
Mike that was stupid. Tt WAS the pilots faults.
Even after these years for me its still depressing to watch a video of that crash
Comment by is — December 8, 2007 #
So many morons here. Do you really think you know better than some decorated and highly experienced military pilots?
It’s clear there was a mechanical faillure - probably along side some organisational errors, as stated before - and that the pilot tried to do everything to stay on the line and not to end up in the crowd. These brave men, who only ejected AFTER it was obvious there was nothing more they could do, are not at fault, and their jail sentences are just more bullshit to keep the SU-27’s nose clean..
A great plane by design, but the funding in these countries is far from adequate. So even the best planes will suffer from lack of maintenance and poorly made parts.
I applaude the crew’s bravery, even though this is obviously a very sad event. But accidents happen, you cannot avoid it. Hopefully this will never happen again. RIP.
And to the people that spout their pro-USA propaganda here. Learn to read and write your own language before you pass judgement on people, about things you clearly have no real knowledge of. So much stupidity. Keep on bombing innocent people, that’s the only thing the USA is good at.
Comment by Jack — December 25, 2007 #
Such a tragedy… I watched it on a reality tv… They said organizers made a horrible mistake by allowing fly-bys over people’s heads. It’s a great machine, SU27, but certainly has it’s limitations, and so do people who fly them. Who’s fault was it? Does it really matter?
Comment by Vladimir — May 23, 2008 #
Is not an pilot mistake..Don be an ignorant..Was an engine failure, left engine, so like the aircraft was too close to the ground because its perofming air show, It hadn`t aply the recober procedure by engine failure..So the aircraft rolls out of control, cuased by torque wich produce only one engine working…It wasnt a pilot mistake the cause , but i readed that the pilot dint respect the minimun altitudes either the distance between spectators and aircraft.
