Very short and low-quality but historical video. On the 17th of July, 1998 by the carrier landing mistake of Pavel Podguzov it was discovered new aerobatic element - “gurza Podguzova” of “Podguzov viper”. Only pilot’s professionalism and highest Su-33 flight performance allowed this situation not to became a disaster.

What exactly is “Podguzov viper”? How is it different from a regular climb, albeit from very low speed?

it looks like a maneouver wich the swedish airforce does with Gripen and perhaps Viggen. when they fly the aircraft pointing up about 45 degrees but moving (ralativley slow) horisontaly forward.

Need to clearify. First of all - sorry. It is not aerobatic element, at least not qualified as. It was emergency situation that gets its own name.
And it is not just sliding with 45 degres on low speed - I saw such thing on Strizhi’s birthday, Su-27 was flying 160 kmph exactly like you’ve told - horizontally with about 45 degrees attack angle (btw minimal allowed horizontal speed for Su-27 - 200 kmph).
Gurza is different - pilot exceeded maximum attack angle and in general he should stall. But due to Su-33 flight performance (especially thrust/weight ratio and plane control possibility in such conditions) plane was able to stand on tail while afterburning… his horizontal speed was much less then allowed by the planned aircraft performance.
It was flying not like a plane but like a rocket already.

My hat’s off for the Russian fighters, and their designers again. It’s an excellent sight, but I wouldn’t want to be the pilot in that cockpit
