They were bombing Vienna Neustadt, Austria. Seven B17s in his outfit were shot down that day. My dad's crew bailed out over central Yugoslavia. All survived, 5 were captured and became POWs (including my dad) and 5 landed on the 'good' side of a battlefield and were re-patriated within 30 days. I found lots of info via the USAF archives at Wright-Pat. Also found help through the bomber group's historian. Produced a short (home) video of my dad's story (his interview + I traveled to Yugoslavia 2x to re-trace his steps and capture) back in 1990. Hope to upload the video one day to share with others.
