My dad (15th AF, 772, 463rd bomber group stationed in Foggia, Italy) was shot down may 10, '44. They were bombing Vienna Neustadt, Austria. Seven B17s in his outfit were shot down that day. My dad's crew bailed out over central Yugoslavia. All survived, 5 were captured and became POWs (including my dad) and 5 landed on the 'good' side of a battlefield and were re-patriated within 30 days.

I found lots of info via the USAF archives at Wright-Pat. Also found help through the bomber group's historian. Produced a short (home) video of my dad's story (his interview + I traveled to Yugoslavia 2x to re-trace his steps and capture) back in 1990. Hope to upload the video one day to share with others.

It's always like this - the number of real fighter aces is quite small. In case of WW2 it was quality vs quantity and looks like it was the only thing to outstand blitzkrieg.

Печальные кадры. Нашел запись как наш ДБ-3 сбивают. Необоходимо признать, что германские летчики были лучшими. Да, конечно, были ассы и в СССР и у союзников, но это еденицы.

My father lived in a small village where hundreds of women and children were killed by these bombers. He was surprised the first time he saw a captured enemy airman that they looked like anyone else.

My dad was a co-pilot on a bomber shot down over the mediteranian in ww2, I 44, I think in May. His name was Albert Draper Craven. I would appreciate any information about that event.
